Soybean Rust has Long, Destructive History
Although soybean rust has been on the radar screens of U.S. soybean growers for
only a few years, it has been causing problems worldwide for more than a
century.
The disease was first reported in Japan in 1902. After it got a foothold, it began to spread quickly:
-
1934 - Other Asian nations and Australia
-
1951 - India
-
1996 - Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda
-
1998 - Zambia and Zimbabwe
-
2000 - Mozambique
-
2001 - Paraguay
-
2002 - Parts of Brazil and northern Argentina
-
2003 - Brazil
-
2004 - Continental United States
Now that Asian soybean rust has reached the United States, every major soybean-producing region in the world has been infected.
