Soybean Rust Has Short but Destructive Life Cycle

Soybean rust has a short life cycle, but it makes the most of its time by wreaking havoc on infected plants.

First - Uredenia, the spore-producing bodies that appear as bumps within lesions, mature within about one week.

They spend the next 10 days or so releasing urediniospores, microscopic spores that are blown by the wind and spread the pathogen.

An infected site can continue to produce spores for as long as 15 weeks, even during dry weather.

Second - The disease typically infects lower leaves first, then moves up the plant. Second
Third - The first symptoms are small lesions on the bottoms of leaves that change from gray to tan or reddish brown as they grow. Third
Fourth - After pod set begins, the infection can quickly spread to upper and middle leaves. Fourth
Fifth - Finally, high infection levels result in yellowing of fields and premature senescence in plants, ultimately reducing pod size and yields. Fifth
Sixth - Once established, soybean rust progresses quickly and can defoliate a healthy field in a matter of days. Sixth

The life cycle and rapid development of soybean rust makes early detection essential. The sooner growers detect disease and apply a fungicide, the greater the likelihood of economic control.
